Cost of living

Cost of living in India differs greatly from one region of the country to another. While the cost is nominal in smaller towns and cities, it is higher in bigger cities and metros. The cost of a product also varies depending on whether it is an industrial town or not. While the price of food is reasonable, other household expenses, such as rent, are growing due to the country’s expanding economy. Public transportation provides an inexpensive way to get around, with buses, trains, taxis and subways. Purchasing a car is also a reasonable alternative. Good health care is available to expatriates living in the major metros, and the cost of medicine is very low. India, as compared to other countries, has a low personal income tax rate. Most expatriate workers in India are required to pay income tax.

The cost of daily items of groceries in the Indian capital New Delhi is compared with US dollar and UK Pound and European Euro. These costs may vary on day-to-day basis depending on the currency variations. The cost of most of the grocery items is within the reach of almost all classes of society. A kilo of tomatoes or most vegetables cost approximately USD 0.28, a loaf of bread comes for about USD 0.23, Half-kilogram butter for USD 1.28, 10 eggs for USD 0.50, a pack of cigarettes for USD 0.69. One can go out and have a cafe meal for USD 2.3 and a restaurant meal for USD 6.9; a chilled beer can costs about USD 1.5.

The amount you are paid as a TEFL teacher is more than enough to lead a lavish life in India. Make the best use of your teaching opportunity to enjoy what the country has to offer.

Hospitals

Medical facilities in India are improving and standards are becoming impressive. India is fast emerging as a favored place of medical treatment. In Delhi, foreign tourists can be seen moving around looking for treatment that is international and yet, cost-effective. With a large pool of highly trained doctors, riding on a technology wave, offering services priced at a fraction of those in the West, healthcare aims to revolutionize India's medical industry.

Major hospitals in India have advanced greatly in last few decades. Where after the independence finding basic treatment was difficult in India, today there are hospitals, which offer treatments that are done in few of the best hospitals in the world. All major hospitals in India along with offering advanced medicinal treatments for different types of disorders and diseases they also have many other health related activities. Many major hospitals offer different packages for health checkup. They also have special wellness centers that offer alternative treatments such as Ayurveda, Aromatherapy and many others. On the other hand few hospitals such as the Apollo hospital offer telemedicine facilities to areas where medicinal consultation is not available.

Apollo Hospitals, which is the largest health care group, has its hospitals in all cities of the nation. Apollo hospitals are located in three metropolitan cities Chennai, Delhi, and Kolkata. They are also located in Ahmedabad, Banglore, Bilaspur and Madurai. Ludhiana, Indore, Ranchi, Pune, Raichur, Mysore and Ranipet. The Centers of Cardiology and Cardio Thoracic Surgery at Apollo hospitals is one the best and largest cardiovascular group in the World. Apollo hospitals also have highly advanced department for Medical and Surgical Gastroenterolgy, Nephrology and Urology, Oncology, Orthopedics and Replacement Surgery. They also have advanced center for Hand and Micro Surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery and for cosmetic surgery.

Other Major Hospitals
Most metropolitan cities in India have the Major hospitals of the nation. In Mumbai, you have the Mumbai Hospital, Breach Candy, Lilawati, and TATA Cancer hospital to name a few. Further, as the treatment cost compared to quality is low as compared to most nations, India is attracting a rising number of medical tourists. However, the condition of government hospitals can be appalling. India spends less than 2% of its GDP on health and it shows in the conditions of its government hospitals. Their reputation is well warranted, with chronic overcrowding, under-funding, poorly-trained support staff or peons and ward boys, insufficient security, and facilities which do not meet the demands of the poor who frequent these institutions. To make it worse, in times of crisis, government hospitals are frequently overwhelmed with a sudden influx of patients who overwork an already struggling infrastructure.

Passport

You must have a passport with you all the time. It's the most basic travel document. Also ensure that your passport will be valid for the entire period you intend to remain overseas, if your passport is lost or stolen, immediately contact your country's embassy or consulate in Delhi and also to nearest police station. Passport valid for a minimum of six months beyond the date of intended departure from India should accompany visa applications.

Survival guide

Health - Your main concerns when in India would be with mosquitoes, water, and eatables, but you should also mull over access to fine medical care, getting healthy amount of exercise and actions to deal with a new climate. Find a local doctor that you know and trust. Make this connection when you arrive, before you have a need. You can get suggestions from friends or colleagues. Spot a high-quality hospital for emergency treatment as well.

Culture - Give yourself time to get used to the Indian culture. Adjust to new ways of doing things and new perspectives. Stay connected to your old life in whatever ways you can. Email is handy for keeping in touch with friends and family, and much cheaper than the telephone. Blend with the Indians so that you get used to the culture quickly. Plan a frequent tour, for a weekend or longer. India is an amazing country, and well worth seeing.

Money & Banking - It is always safe to keep the rupees in hand. If you need to exchange money, do it at authorized places. International debit/credit cards can be used at restaurants and shopping malls. Indian currency notes circulate stay in circulation for a very long time and the small notes in particular become much worn. You can change old notes for new ones at some banks or save them and use them creatively as tips. Hand them back and you'll usually be given a note slightly higher up the acceptability scale. Try to have smaller denomination notes as there is a perpetual shortage of small change.

Eating Out - When it comes to eating out options, you will be spoilt for choice. Ranging from small streetside eateries, you can also find the top end restaurants boasting cuisines around the world. Until and unless your digestive system is immune to the local conditions, do not venture out to eat in roadside eateries.

Transportation - It is possible to rent a car or two wheeler to get around in India. Public transportation such as autorickshaw, buses and taxis are available at low costs. Also, some cities, like Hyderabad and Chennai have a suburban train system. Trains and car rental are perfect for traveling around India.
