Thailand is a prominent Southeast Asian nation that extends to the Malay Peninsula to its south where it is bordered by Malaysia. The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia known for its beaches and shopping opportunities. Its capital and largest city is Bangkok, located in central Thailand. Siam is the name known by many outsiders outside of Thailand for centuries. The country was known as Siam to the world until 1939 and again between 1945 and 1949. On May 11, 1949, an official proclamation changed the name of the country to "Thailand" or "Prathet Thai" (in Thai). Till date, Siam is now known as Thailand by all. The word Thai represents free. Therefore, Thailand means "Land of the Free." Thailand's government structure has undergone gradual and practical evolution in response to the changing environment. Ever since 1932, it has been a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentarian form of government. The bicameral parliament is composed of elected representatives and appointed senators. Thailand enjoys a warm, tropical climate affected by an annual monsoon with a rainy season from June to October and a dry season the rest of the year. Anyone traveling to the kingdom of Thailand would need to know about the climate so as to know what to expect and have a more comfortable journey throughout. The hottest months are in April and May, with locals also complaining about the heat of summer. The South west monsoons arrive in June bringing some relief to the parched earth. This season continues till the end of October with intermittent bursts of rain. The months from November till the end of February is a little more pleasant than the rest of the seasons with a decrease in the levels of humidity and cool breezes blowing from the North East. Bangkok
Bangkok (Thai: āļāļĢāļļāļāđāļāļāļŊ Krung Thep) is the capital of Thailand and by far its
largest city with an estimated population of over 11 million. Bangkok is one of
Asiaâs most cosmopolitan cities. Created as the Thai capital in 1782 by the
first monarch of the present Chakri dynasty, Bangkok is a national treasure
house and Thailandâs spiritual, cultural, political, commercial, educational and
diplomatic centre.
Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai (āđāļāļĩāļĒāļāđāļŦāļĄāđ)
is the hub of Northern Thailand. With a population of over 170,000 in the city
proper (but more than 1 million in the metropolitan area), it is Thailand's
fifth-largest city. Located on a plain at an elevation of 316 m, surrounded by
mountains and lush countryside, it is much greener and quieter than the capital,
and has a cosmopolitan air and a significant expat population, factors which
have led many from Bangkok to settle permanently in this "Rose of the North".
Koh Samui
Ko Samui (āđāļāļēāļ°āļŠāļĄāļļāļĒ), often called just Samui (āļŠāļĄāļļāļĒ) is
an island in the Gulf of Thailand, some 700km south of Bangkok and about 80km
from the eastern coastline of southern Thailand.
Pattaya
Pattaya (āļāļąāļāļĒāļē) is a popular resort on the North Gulf
Coast of Eastern Thailand, 150 km south-east of Bangkok. Pattaya is most famous
for its go-go and beer bars, but besides the men and women on offer the place
has made efforts to provide more family-friendly attractions and activities.
Although the sex industry is still going strong in Pattaya, it also attracts
local families and holidaymakers from far and wide. Efforts by the local
authorities over the past few years have improved the quality of the beaches,
but they are still lackluster by Thailand's high standards, and over-development
has long since destroyed some of the natural charms it once had. However, the
plethora of hotels and guest houses and easy access from the capital and airport
make it a popular weekend getaway. Catering for over 5 million tourists yearly,
Pattaya is also able to offer an excellent range of eating choices and a wide
variety of things to do and see, and its population is a colorful potpourri of
mixed nationalities from near and far.
Phuket
Phuket (āļ āļđāđāļāđāļ), pronounced (roughly) "poo-get", is Thailand's largest island.
It is 48 km in length, 21 km at its widest, and is located in Southern Thailand,
on the west-facing Andaman Sea coastline, suspended from the southern tip of
Phang Nga Province by a pair of short but substantial road bridges.
